THE STORY BEHIND
This painting began as a free interpretation of a carpet seen at the carpet boutique Reyhani — its structure loosely echoed in the vertical lines that run through the work like warp threads pulled taut, then let go.
But a carpet is also a metaphor: a pattern, painstakingly built thread by thread, holding a certain order in place. The Unweaving imagines what happens when that pattern can no longer hold - when threads begin to loosen, fray, and pull apart. Dark bands frame the composition top and bottom, like the raw edges of something once woven now coming undone.
This is not a picture of destruction, but of necessary dissolution. Before a new order can be woven — a new way of living, relating, or understanding — the old structure has to release its grip. The unweaving is not the opposite of creation; it is its first condition.
Part of the exhibition New World Order, on view at carpet boutique Reyhani, Graz.
